A data foi definida desta forma pelo fato de a Páscoa ter origem judaica, e a celebração da Páscoa judaica ter início no equinócio. Em 2023, portanto, cairá no dia 09 de abril.

Para os cristãos, ela é símbolo de ressurreição de Jesus Cristo, que morreu com o intuito de libertar a humanidade do pecado. Já a Páscoa judaica comemora a libertação do seu povo, que era escravizado.

A data marca o fim da chamada Semana Santa, que se inicia no Domingo de Ramos e acaba no Domingo de Páscoa.

Durante a Semana Santa são realizadas procissões e cerimônias especiais, principalmente na quinta e na sexta-feira, conhecida como Sexta-feira Santa ou Sexta-Feira da Paixão. No Sábado de Aleluia é proclamado a ressurreição.
